Hi I did exactly the same thing for my HPI Baja, I would make the parts a mm or so thicker than required though to compensate for the loss of strength if you duplicate an aluminium part. A piece of glass works fine, I used flexible acryl glass the last time but the carbon sheet ended up slightly curved.
